Let's Geaux Back to School

A Cajun Family's Guide to Surviving the First Bell

By Hannah Langlinais, Publisher and Editor August 7, 2026

Y'all, summer's winding down faster than a sno-ball melts in July, and that means one thing: it's back-to-school season in South Louisiana. Between the crawfish boils and the beach trips, somehow we gotta get these babies ready for that first bell - and we're gonna do it the Cajun way: with heart, heat, and a whole lot of "laissez les bons temps rouler" energy.

The Supply List, Cajun-Style

Sure, every kid needs pencils, folders, and a backpack that can survive a hurricane season. But here's the Cajun twist: send 'em off with a little something extra in that bag. A small bottle of hand sanitizer that smells like king cake (yes, that exists), a lucky LSU or Saints pencil, or a handwritten note tucked in the front pocket that says "Cher, I love you, now go make Mamere proud." The supplies matter, but the love in the bag matters more.

Lunchbox Traditions That Bring the Bayou to the Cafeteria

Forget boring sandwiches. Pack a little piece of home instead:

  • Boudin balls (cooled and packed with a napkin, of course) for the kid who wants something different
  • Cracklins or boudin kolaches as a Friday treat
  • Rice and gravy in a thermos for the little one who needs comfort food on a rough day
  • A praline or two tucked in as a sweet surprise

Even a simple PB&J feels more special with a side of dirty rice from last night's supper. Food is love in a Cajun household, and there's no reason that stops just because school's back in session.

Blessings, Prayers, and First-Day Traditions

Down here, we don't just send our kids off - we bless them off. Many Cajun families start the school year with a quick prayer over breakfast, a sprinkle of holy water by the door, or a visit to church the Sunday before school starts to ask for a good year. Even if your family isn't the churchgoing type, consider starting your own tradition: a family gumbo the night before school starts, a "first day of school" photo on the porch, or a special breakfast of beignets to kick things off right.

Tips From the Front Porch

  1. Set the routine early. Start bedtime and wake-up schedules a week before school starts; don't wait 'til the morning of to shock everybody's system.
  2. Meal prep like you're feeding an army. Cook a big pot of something Sunday night (jambalaya freezes beautifully) so weeknight suppers are one less thing to worry about.
  3. Keep a "hurricane bag" mentality for backpacks. Down here we always keep extras on hand; extra masks, snacks, chargers, and a poncho never hurt nobody, especially during our unpredictable fall storms.
  4. Lean on your village. Whether it's grandma picking up carpool or the neighbor swapping snack duty, Cajun families have always thrived on community. Use it.

Back-to-school season doesn't have to be stressful; it can be another excuse to celebrate what makes South Louisiana families special: good food, deep faith, and a whole lot of love wrapped up in every lunchbox and lucky charm. So bless their hearts, pack that boudin, say that prayer, and send 'em off with pride.
